While chronic heartburn and GERD are often considered to be adult disorders, it is becoming more common among children and teens. Almost all children and adults have a little bit of gastro-esophageal reflux, often without being aware of it. Reflux is common in babies and children, and it is usually not a sign of a serious problem. Most babies stop having reflux around 1 year of age. However, in some children, this symptom persists and the stomach contents remain in the esophagus and damage the esophageal lining. An older child or a teenager may have the same symptoms as an adult (heartburn, sour or bitter taste in the mouth, persistent cough, respiratory problems and difficulty to swallow). It?s time to see a child?s doctor. The doctor may first suggest lifestyle modifications to see if this will ease the reflux symptoms. If not, the doctor may recommend antacid medication, acid suppressors or acid blockers medication. Surgery may be the best option for children who have severe symptoms that do not respond to medication.
