RIM denies abandoning consumer BlackBerry market - Computers ...

BlackBerry business to concentrate on enterprise customers, arguing that it can be enhancing business support in preference to slashing smartphones for most of the people.??We remain committed to all of our Customers (consumer & enterprise) and are enhancing our support/solutions for enterprise? RIM?s MD of world sales and regional marketing Patrick Spence said today,??[our] goal is to assist our enterprise customers capitalise [sic] at the opportunities presented by consumerization while minimizing risks.?

The financial situation at RIM is definitely dire presently. The Canadian company announced a depressing $125m loss in Q4, prompting a spree of executive lay-offs?and co-founder Jim Balsillie resigning from the RIM board.

However, comments by RIM CEO Thorsten Heins that the corporate will require ?substantial change? that allows you to right itself, and the concession that ?we will?t do everything ourselves but we can do what we?re good at? caused suggestions that BlackBerry would abandon the patron market to iOS and Android. That, RIM spokespeople now say, is unquestionably not the case.

?We aren?t exiting the shopper market or withdrawing from any battles? Spence insisted this morning, ?we are enhancing our solutions for enterprise.?

Exactly what those enhancements will include is still seen, with RIM waiting on BlackBerry 10?later in 2012 for its phone and tablet turnaround. Heins comments at the company?s strategy were relatively vague, promising only to ?drive greater operational performance through a?variety of initiatives including increased management accountability and process discipline? together with undertaking ?a comprehensive review of strategic opportunities including partnerships and joint ventures,?licensing, and alternative ways to leverage RIM?s assets and maximize value for our stakeholders.?

Atari offering $50,000 for iOS Pong reinvention

"Pong," one of the most iconic video games of all time, turns 40 this year. To bring attention to this, as well as add a fresh new coat of paint, Atari is holding a contest for anyone who can create the best version possible for iOS. The grand prize is $50,000.

The Pong Indie Developer Challenge commenced one month ago today, February 28, and runs until April 15. The total amount up for grabs exceeds $100,000; second place gets $37,500; third place $15,000; and $5,000 goes to the remaining seven finalists.?

A panel of game industry veterans, including Nolan Bushnell -- who not only founded Atari but also brought electronic table tennis to the mass market in the first place -- will judge the games. In addition to the cash prizes, any game (not just first prize) Atari sees fit to publish will reward the developers with revenue sharing, for up to three years according to The Unofficial Apple Weblog.?

For many years, Atari has attempted to update "Pong" in various ways, but most have never caught on. When the initial "Pong" craze started to subside, a number of follow-ups were produced: "Super Pong," "Pong Doubles," "Quadrapong," and "Pin-Pong." Only its one-player variant, "Breakout," was received warmly by the public. But it plays so differently most are unaware it has a predecessor.?

In 1999, Atari produced "Pong: The Next Level" to help reignite interest in the franchise, with power-ups and new gameplay modes added to the formula, but the reception was cold. Since then, the original formula has remained untouched. It appears regularly in compilations, alongside other titles from the game's easiest days.

One example is "Retro Atari Classics" for the original DS; the visuals were updated by a prominent street artist, as were all the other offerings, but the game played exactly the same as it did in 1972. That will be the real challenge for today's indie developers: to see if they can teach an old dog a new trick, while staying true to its original essence.

I just returned last night from seeing six of our grandchildren. As always, it warms my heart and I am smiling now just?thinking?about it. ?It was SO cute to see the 2-year-old cousins ? one boy, one girl ? play together. They are quite a pair! As is common with children their age they are WIDE OPEN. That meant that we encouraged our children?s relationships with other children regardless of that child?s sex. We tried to minimize?singling out a friend as a ?boyfriend?, ?girlfriend? or ?best friend? ( BFF now?) instead focusing on being FRIENDS.?When one child is designated a ?best friend? that instantly demotes all other friends to a lesser role. Encouraging healthy friendships is an important?responsibility?of parents.

When one of our daughters was planning her wedding, we talked about who (besides her BEAUTIFUL sisters) she wanted in her wedding as bridesmaids. ?Well, Jonathan and David are the closest friends I have had for the longest time.?

Well, those young men would not have looked so good in the bridesmaid dresses, but they did look very nice in suits as ushers! The fact was, they?had?been dear friends since childhood and being in each other?s weddings reflected that relationship. Their friendship has evolved to include all their spouses, though now they are separated by distance.

Friends enrich our lives in so many ways and helping our children to value true friendship is a wonderful legacy to pass on.

Asia stocks fall as big economies show fatigue

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets fell Friday, dragged down by reports of a manufacturing slowdown in China and a deepening economic malaise in Europe.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index dropped 1 percent to 10,027.72 as the country's formidable export sector faded amid fears of slowing overseas demand.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 0.9 percent to 20,712.70 and South Korea's Kospi shed 0.3 percent to 2,019.79.

Australia's S&P/ASX 200 slipped 0.2 percent to 4,264.50 as the country's mining and resource shares took a pounding over worries of reduced demand from China, the world's biggest consumer of raw materials.

BHP Billiton, the world's largest mining company, lost 1.3 percent in Sydney. Steel makers also took a hit. South Korea's POSCO lost 0.9 percent while Japan's JFE Holdings dropped 2.2 percent.

On Thursday, data showed China's manufacturing is contracting. An index compiled by HSBC fell to 48.1 in March from 49.6 in February. Figures below 50 indicate that manufacturing is shrinking.

That's a negative sign because growth in China has played a key role in shoring up the global economy since the financial crisis of 2008.

And in another sign of cooling growth in the world's No. 2 economy, new home prices dropped in 45 Chinese cities in February as the government implemented measures to cool property speculation.

Worries about China's deceleration were compounded by a survey Thursday showing slower growth in Europe. An index of economic activity from financial information company Markit fell to 48.8 in March from 49.3 a month earlier. The index combines both the services and manufacturing.

Japanese exporters whose fortunes are closely linked with European demand came under pressure. Honda Motor Corp. lost 2.3 percent and Mazda Motor Corp. shed 2.1 percent. Sharp Corp. slid 2.9 percent and Sony Corp. lost 2.6 percent.

A rare gainer was Japanese food processor Yukiguni Maitake Co., which rose 0.6 percent a day after announcing a study showed that maitake mushrooms might help fight obesity, Kyodo News reported.

Benchmark oil for May delivery was up 17 cents to $105.52 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.92 to finish at $105.35 per barrel on the Nymex on Thursday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.3198 from $1.3181 late Thursday in New York. The dollar rose to 82.88 yen from 82.59 yen.

Preemies can lag in language later on: study

(Reuters) - Children who were born prematurely may lag behind their peers when it comes to more advanced language skills, according to an international study that involved more than 2,000 children.

The researchers, whose findings were reported in Pediatrics, found that, in general, preterm babies tend to have more difficulty with complex language skills as they grow older, such as reading or writing complex sentence structures -- at least, up to age 12.

The study, which pooled data from 17 previous studies, looked at 1,529 premature children born before the 37th week of pregnancy, and 945 full-term children.

It does not mean that premature babies are doomed to long-term language problems. But they may have a tougher time than their peers do later on in school.

"While growing up, preterm-born children have increasing difficulties with complex language function," wrote study leader Inge van Noort-van der Spek, at Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and colleagues.

The study found that in early childhood, there were smaller differences between preterm and full-term children as far as simple language abilities, like basic vocabulary.

But between the ages of 3 and 12, the gap tended to widen when it came to complex language skills.

"This study confirms what is observed in the real-life clinical setting: preterm children are at higher risk of language problems, and as the language task becomes more demanding, the proportion of children with significant impairment also increases," said Thuy Mai Luu, a pediatrician at CHU Sainte-Justine and the University of Montreal in Canada who was not involved in the study.

In general, preterm children may have normal language skills at the age of 2, when the demands are low.

"However, a few years later, when language functions required to succeed in school are more complex, this is the time when problems may appear and limit the child in scholastic or social activities," Luu said.

In her own research, she has found that preterm children tend to "catch up" to their peers as far as basic language -- and brain imaging research suggests preemies can develop "compensatory" nerve connections related to simple language skills.

It's possible, though, that for complex language tasks, there is a limit to the brain's ability to compensate, she added.

Researchers from Murdoch Childrens Research Institute and the University of Melbourne have identified a new way to accurately test for peanut allergy.

It is hoped the test would be more cost effective and convenient than standard approaches and minimise over-diagnosis of peanut allergy in the community.

Currently, an oral food challenge is the standard for diagnosing peanut allergy, and while an oral food challenge is definitive in diagnosing patients, it is time-consuming, costly and patients risk severe reactions such as anaphylaxis.

The new test researchers have identified uses part of the peanut protein called 'Arah2' and involves a two-step screening process. Researchers found they could perform a blood test, followed by the Arah2 test, which was more accurate and highly predictive than using one of the tests alone. They found the two step testing process reduced the need for oral food challenges by four-fold.

Co-lead researcher, Thanh Dang, a University of Melbourne PhD student based at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, said the new test has many benefits.

"By reducing the number of oral food challenges, this helps prevent many peanut allergics undertaking the unnecessary risks involved."

A/Professor Katie Allen said the new test could reduce the burden on clinicians and the health care system.

"Due to the rapid increase in rates of sensitisation to foods, allergy services are overwhelmed, and food challenge tests might be difficult to access. This method would help alleviate the current strain and demand on clinical allergy services, with the allergy patient waiting times in excess of 18 months in many centres in Australia," she said.

Researchers say the test would also help minimise over-diagnosis, and would reduce the number of patients requiring referral to specialist services for confirmation of a food allergy, by using oral food challenges.

Patients would simply need to visit a GP rather than require a referral to a specialist allergy clinic.

"Due to the long wait times for specialist's clinics, many clinicians are faced with the difficult task of having to assess the presence of food allergy based solely on a positive skin prick test or other available tests and must err on the side of caution and accept a diagnosis of 'possible' food allergy in these situations," Dr Allen said

"This approach can lead to over diagnosis of peanut allergy in the community and a potentially unnecessary burden on the health care system," she said.

Diagnosis of peanut allergy is relatively straightforward when there is an obvious history of clinical reaction to peanut ingestion. However, diagnosis can be more complicated in cases in which the clinical history is not clear or in children who have not yet been exposed to a food.

Researchers say the 'Arah2' twostep process can be used in children with high risk of food allergy, such as those with eczema and other food allergies and for those who haven't eaten peanuts but have a strong family history of food allergy.
